Branching Decision Activity

Branch Point

A decision tree the whole room walks together. A situation opens, the room chooses, and that choice determines both what happens next and which options remain. Three or four decisions later you arrive somewhere specific, with the path visible behind you so you can point at the exact step it turned. Six looks ship with it — the activity’s own, plus a beach, a card room, an arcade, a glasshouse and a summit, each drawn in the file itself with no images to load. Switch mid-session from the masthead; a saved copy keeps the one you chose.

Problem
A scenario question asks “what would you do?” once and grades the answer. Real situations are sequences, where an early decision that looks entirely reasonable quietly removes the good options from step three. A quiz cannot show that; a tree can.
Who it helps
Anyone being developed on judgement rather than procedure — de-escalation, stakeholder conversations, incident handling — where the same starting point can end several different ways.
In training
Run it with the room voting out loud, or split teams down separate paths and compare where everyone landed. Endings are rated by what they cost, not by right or wrong, and each scenario names the decision that actually mattered — usually the first one, which never looks decisive at the time.
Skills shown
Branching state machine, graph traversal, path recording, consequence design, scenario writing, in-browser editing with persistent export.

How to edit

  1. Click Edit this activity in the corner.
  2. Each node has a title, a body, and a set of choices. Every choice points at the id of another node — or at an ending.
  3. Endings are rated good, mixed, or bad, which sets their colour. Aim for more mixed than either extreme — that is what real outcomes look like.
  4. The pivot line appears at every ending and names the decision that actually mattered. Write it last, once you can see the whole tree.
  5. Click Save my version for a copy with your scenarios built in.
